A Sunken Treasure in the Big Apple Still Remains Elusive
According to an article in the NewYorker magazine about the East River in NEw York, there is a likely possibility of a treasure that sunk to the bottom of the river in 1903. The incident happened when a barge named the “Harold” in the Arthur Kill section located between Staten Island and New Jersey—capsized, spilling its cargo of silver ingots. It supposedly carried 7,678 bars; it was estimated that about 6,000 were recovered soon after. That means there are around 1,400 bars still at the bottom of the river and they could be worth a total of over 30 million dollars. The bars belong to the Guggenheim family and the missing loot has been referred to the “Guggenheim Treasure”. IT is not known if any bars have been recovered the last several decades, if they have it’s quite possible the treasure hunters are not letting anyone know.
